Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak) has accused Umno warlords of masterminding amendments to the Sedition Act, and attempts to bulldoze it through Parliament.
"Why is this amendment being rushed? Is it because of Umno's instructions to amend the Act?
"I have information that 60 Umno division chiefs met with the attorney-general, and it is they who pressured the AG to bring these (Sedition Act) amendments to Parliament," Azmin told the Dewan Rakyat.
As such he said, the bill should be looked at carefully, and not be pushed through simply because of pressure from Umno.
Azmin also urged Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia to show that he is independent from outside influences and defer the bill.
"I know you (Pandikar) are drowning from dealing with Umno and BN [...] So I beg you, show that you are a speaker who is independent and stern," he said.
Speaker wants debate to continue
Pandikar however did not respond to Azmin's pleading and stood by his earlier ruling that the debate must continue.
BN lawmakers also did not respond to Azmin's allegations.
On the opposition's displeasure with the bill not being deferred, Pandikar adviced the lawmakers to take this to the people.
"It is not for me to decide who is right or wrong after the debate. Take your dissatisfaction to the people, (tell them) that in the next general election, choose which side do you want, the one with the Sedition Act or the one without," the speaker told the House.
The Dewan Rakyat will debate on the amendments to the Sedition Act today and a motion has been passed not to end the session until the debate is over. - M'kini
