Cops HUNT DOWN brother of ex-Cabinet Minister
KOTA KINABALU - Sabah police are in a manhunt for a suspect, dubbed Mat Malaya, 43, who allegedly shot a man in the leg at an air-conditioning workshop along Jalan Tuaran, outside Kota Kinabalu, on Wednesday night.
Police have identified the suspect as a drug pusher and the brother of a former Federal Minister.
The shooting incident reportedly happened after the suspect accused the victim, 36, of staring at him. This ended in an argument, eye witness reports go, with the suspect whipping out a pistol and firing three shots, one of which lodged in the right thigh of the victim.
“Police found three bullet casings at the workshop,” said Sabah Police Commissioner Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman in a statement.
He added that police also found a black mask, a pistol holder, a plastic packet of a crystal-like substance believed to be syabu, and an electronic scale inside the suspect’s Honda Integra abandoned at the workshop.
Police have identified the suspect as a drug pusher who has been living in the Sabah capital for the past few months. City police chief Assist Comm M. Chandra has confirmed the suspect’s house was found deserted on Friday. He’s believed to have left the state with his family but all exit points are being monitored.
The case has been classified under section 307 of the Penal Code as attempted murder, a charge which carries a jail term up to 20 years.
In 2008, according to police records, the suspect escaped the death sentence when the High Court freed him on a charge of trafficking in cannabis. He was discharged and acquitted. - FMT
