D-DAY FOR AZIZAH IN P PAUH

D-DAY FOR AZIZAH IN P PAUH
PERMATANG PAUH - Today will see 71,890 registered voters in Permatang Pauh casting their votes for their new Member of Parliament through 25 channels and 128 streams.
PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will face Umno’s Suhaimi Sabudin and two other candidates in the battle for PKR to retain the seat.
The other two were Salleh Isahak, 53, and Azman Shafie, 50.
The by-election is being held following the imprisonment of its incumbent, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Dr Wan Azizah’s husband, after he was found guilty of sodomy.
Permatang Pauh has been PKR’s stronghold since the Pakatan Rakyat component party took the seat back in 1999. So it is almost a given that PKR will retain the seat.
Anwar had initially won the parliamentary seat back in 1982 under the Barisan Nasional ticket before he was sacked in 1998.
Dr Wan Azizah then led PKR to capture the seat in the 1999 general election.
Since then, the seat has remained with PKR through three general elections and one by-election. So analysts do not expect any massive change in support this time around, too.
In the last general election, Anwar defeated Barisan Nasional’s Dr Mazlan Ismail with a 11,721-vote majority.
Although the party is expected to sail through this time, this by-election is said to be one of the biggest for PKR as a way to gauge the support of the people for PKR and Pakatan amid internal feuds within the Opposition alliance.
Observers said the question now was only the margin of PKR’s victory.
Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN) will be used as the counting centre.
Results are expected to be known late tonight. - Therakyatpost
