HOW IRRESPONSIBLE: Umno warlord admits 1MDB wasn't discussed in detail at supreme council meet
The Umno supreme council meeting on Monday did not scrutinise the controversies surrounding 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) as its members did not want to seen as meddling in the ailing firm's business.
"We didn't speak in detail," supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman told Malaysiakini.
He was asked if 1MDB's early debt-repayment issues were raised at the supreme council meeting, where six banks have demanded the company to repay its USD975 million (RM3.52 billion) debt four months earlier as reported by Singapore's Business Times.
Tajuddin said during the supreme council meeting, members only stressed on the need to resolve the issues surrounding 1MDB.
"All we want is everything to be okay.
"There's no need for us to talk details. We don't want to interfere with the management and board of 1MDB. We are not a management party to 1MDB.
"The party president (Najib Abdul Razak) assured and promised that 1MDB's problems will be solved," he added.
Tajuddin, who is also deputy agriculture and agro-based industry minister, said the supreme council trusted Najib to keep his word.
Setting things right
However, he said if the problems are not fixed, then Umno would need to interfere.
"If the board (of 1MDB) can't do it's job, then only we come in," he said without elaborating.
Umno's leaders, he said, believe that 1MDB's problems can be resolved if it gets the "right team" for the job.
"We have expressed our concern that we are not happy with the management and board, change them if necessary," added the Pasir Salak lawmaker.
The 1MDB issue has become the focal point of those, including former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, calling on Najib to step down.
Following the supreme council meeting, the prime minister declared that he has the full backing of Umno.
However, there were also reports of not all supreme council members being on the same page with regard to this issue. - M'kini
