Kadir: By-elections can’t gauge national sentiment

Voters in both Rompin and Permatang Pauh are loyal to the incumbent parties.

PETALING JAYA: The results of the Rompin and Permatang Pauh by-elections will not constitute a definitive barometer with which to measure the national political sentiment, according to veteran journalist A Kadir Jasin.
“This is because both are rural seats with Malays forming the majority of voters,” he says in his latest blog posting.
He agrees with most commentators that Umno’s chances in Rompin are excellent, noting that the opposition has never won the seat.
He says both Rompin and Permatang Pauh can be regarded as rural constituencies that are loyal to the incumbent parties.
However, he adds, PKR may suffer a reduced majority because of BN’s fierce campaigning there and some opposition within Pakatan Rakyat to the candidacy of PKR President Wan Azizah Ismail.
“Some analysts have said PKR’s hopes would be brighter if someone other than Wan Azizah was contesting,” he says. “They even say that her daughter, Nurul Nuha, would have a better hope of repeating PKR’s impressive successes there.
“However, PKR did not have much of a choice because it feared that DAP and PAS might not support a candidate other than Wan Azizah, even if it was Nurul Nuha. In fact, even with Wan Azizah as candidate, there is still some opposition from elements in PAS and DAP.”
Kadir says Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will be the biggest beneficiary of a Barisan Nasional win in Permatang Pauh.
“It will be taken as proof that he has the confidence of voters despite the many accusations thrown at him and allegations that many of his policies are burdensome to the public,” he says.
“Najib will then be able to raise his status from being a prime minister who rules like a president to one who can carry himself like one of those ancient emperors, invincible against all criticism and free to do anything he likes.”
