Malay rights group Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali pointed out today that the acts of violence during the recent Permatang Pauh by-election were related to the Pakatan Rakyat leaders' "provocative" speeches.
He said their eagerness in delivering speeches during the campaigning period had somewhat influenced supporters to turn aggressive.
"Look at what (Selangor Menteri Besar) (Mohamed) Azmin Ali said. He called the IGP (Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar) an Umno lackey," said Ibrahim.
That kind of speech, he said, makes supporters bolder and unruly.
He added that police should investigate Azmin for his "provocative" speech even if the PKR leader decided to apologise.
"If he is a true leader, he would have called the IGP and apologised.
"There is no need for others to demand him to do so. He should have done it personally. However, that does not mean that he should be off the hook.
"Police should still carry out the investigations against him. Charge the man if there is enough evidence," said Ibrahim.
He said investigations carried out might not end in prosecution but police needed to be seen as taking action against Azmin to avoid a repeat of such statement.
"The public has to understand this. I am not telling the police to charge him. I am just asking them to investigate.
"If there is enough evidence to take him to court then do so. If not, let the public decide what kind of leader he (Azmin) really is," said Ibrahim.
Khalid was reported today that he was shocked by the behaviour of those involved in fights and acts of violence during the Permatang Pauh by-election, and described it as the work of “barbaric” and “uncivilised” people.
"They (the supporters) were uncivilised. Throwing stones at media personnel, fighting during campaigning, intimidating government officials and destroying properties. These are all uncalled for," said Khalid.
He said several investigation papers had been opened to investigate cases that occurred during the by-election adding that so far more than 100 police reports had been lodged by various parties.
Khalid described the fight yesterday as one of the worst in Malaysia's election history.
