Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has finally gone on the offensive, accusing former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad of twisting the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) issue.
According to Bernama, Najib claimed Mahathir had initially said that 1MDB had lost RM42 billion but later said the amount was not missing but was actually owed by 1MDB.
Najib insisted that Putrajaya can resolve the 1MDB issue if given time to do so.
Elaborating on the recent controversy over Lembaga Tabung Haji's (TH) purchase of cash-strapped 1MDB's land, Najib stressed it was an investment and not a bailout.
Najib said he advised the pilgrimage fund to sell the land after it was turned into an issue.
However, he said it is a lost to Tabung Haji depositors as the fund will only make between RM5 million to RM6 million from the sale instead of the potential profit of up to RM170 million.
"But because the issue has been spun into a hot issue, people say: 'You are shooting yourself at your foot', this is what we describe as irrational.
"Why do we do something? For the good of the rakyat. Give us a chance.
"Everything can be resolved but give leaders a chance to resolve the matter," he said. -Mkini
