Umno leader Datuk Abdullah Abu Bakar has received a show cause letter from the party headquarters demanding explanation for his role in the Taman Medan cross protest last month but he opted to stay silent on the matter.
Abdullah, the elder brother of Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, said it would not be wise for him to say anything at the moment.
"I have reserve my comment for the time being," Abdullah told The Malaysian Insider this evening.
According to the party secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, "less than five" Umno members were involved in the protest.
He was quoted by Malaysiakini saying, "We wrote to them, stating 'please, whatever you're going to do, remember this is a multiracial country.' We also told them that Umno does not profess to and condone such things".
According to Malaysiakini, among those who received the letters were Abdullah as well as former Petaling Jaya Selatan Umno Wanita chief Munaliza Hamzah.
Tengku Adnan said the Umno members were also reminded that Malaysians looked up to Umno because the party was the lynchpin of the Barisan Nasional coalition, which forms the government.
Disciplinary action awaits those who were served the letters if the party's disciplinary board finds grounds for it, the party secretary-general had also said.
Separately, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim told The Malaysian Insider that police investigations into the case were almost complete.
Police have found that although Abdullah was present during the protest, he did not play an active role.
"That was what we gathered in the investigation but we will hand the investigation papers to the Attorney General Chamber for further action," said Noor Rashid.
Meanwhile a visit to the Taman Medan church showed that the place of worship has yet to put back the cross which was taken down as demanded by the protesters last month.
The church leadership had told the media last month that they would wait for God to direct them on the matter.
The Selangor government, however, has said the church had the right to put up the cross again.
On April 19, some 50 people gathered outside the new church on a Sunday during its worship service, to demand that the cross affixed to its building be removed as it was "challenging Islam" and could sway the faith of Muslims youths in the area.
The church is housed in a corner shop lot of a commercial area near some flats, in what is a predominantly Muslim residential area.
