The Brickfields neighbourhood in Kuala Lumpur has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years and it now has all the facilities of a modern township – except for a police station.
The former district police headquarters was situated in Jalan Tun Sambanthan. However, it was later demolished and was relocated to Jalan Klang Lama.
The Malaysian Insider had reported that the empty land, together with the land opposite where the barracks were located, has been earmarked for a RM2 billion development by Seni Nadi Land Sdn Bhd.
“Crime is common here, regardless of whether it is petty crime or serious incidents. It is a hassle to go all the way to Jalan Klang Lama to lodge a police report," a resident who wanted to be known only as Jeyashree said.
A trader, who declined to be named, said every week there was crime committed in the area, even in the day.
“People are helpless and clueless which police station to go to when something happens," he said, adding that even the mobile police station that used to be station in Jalan Tun Sambanthan had been removed.
A check with the Jalan Travers police station revealed that it does not accept cases from Brickfields even though it is the nearest.
A policeman at the station said if a crime was committed in Brickfields, a report had to be lodged at the police station in Jalan Klang Lama.
He said the Jalan Travers police station jurisdiction was only from Bangsar Shopping Centre to Jalan Maarof in Bangsar and Bukit Damansara.
