Portraits of seven Umno presidents caught the attention of passers by at the Putra World Trade Centre tonight as one former premier's image was engulfed in darkness.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad's portrait at the entrance of Dewan Tun Razak was the only one among seven that was not lit.

However, a police officer standing guard told Malaysiakini that there was nothing insidious about the situation.

"(The bulb) just burned out, and hasn't been replaced yet," he said.

Coincidence or otherwise, some social media users have asked if this was a reflection of current events, as the former premier has launched a vicious campaign that threatens to blackout Najib's political career.

Among others, Mahathir has questioned where 1MDB's funds have gone and predicted that Najib would cause BN's defeat if he did not quit office.

The Umno owned building was also the venue of the infamous 'Nothing2Hide' dialogue on June 5, where Najib was supposed to address NGOs on the 1MDB controversy.

Najib decided to give the event a miss, allowing Mahathir to somehow take the stage and address the crowd.

Earlier today, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim organised a breaking of fast dinner with media personel, who flocked around the extinguished visage of Mahathir and took pictures.

At about midnight, Federal Territories Umno Youth leader Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafli informed Malaysiakini that the lighting malfunction had been resolved.
