Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today said Majlis Amanah Rakyat's (Mara) Australian property buy was decided by consensus, claiming that some media organisations had purportedly twisted the remarks of agency chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

Annuar had reportedly said today that Najib approved the purchase of a property in Melbourne, which has become the subject of scrutiny after a media expose revealed the price had been inflated.
"The decision is made based on consensus by the economic council," Najib posted in his Twitter account this evening.

Najib also tweeted that action would be taken if any party was found trying to dupe the council.
Annuar, meanwhile, reiterated that approval for the purchase was made by the economic council.
"This is the procedure that has been set by the government and must be followed. Approval by any individual, including Datuk Seri Najib, does not arise. I hope this is clear," he wrote on his Facebook page this evening.
At his press conference this morning, Annuar was asked by reporters about the steps for approval to be granted for such investments.
The transcript about approvals and procedure is as follows:
Q: You said that the approval had to go through the economic council chaired by the PM, right?
Annuar: Yes.
Q: Did the prime minister have to approve the deal before the purchase was made?
Annuar: Yes, it is part of the procedure.
Q: So the PM was aware that Dudley House was being bought?
Annuar: Yes, because the proposal, after being approve by Majlis Mara, we need to get approval from Kementerian Luar Bandar and then to be submitted either to MoF (Finance Ministry) or to the Economic Council and that was done.
Mara's purchase of the Dudley International House apartment block was overpaid by A$4.75 million (RM13.8 million), Australian paper The Age had reported yesterday.
The paper had been uncovering a Melbourne property scam and found that “a group of super-rich Malaysian officials” overbid for the building from A$17.8 million to A$22.5 million (RM65.3 million), with the difference pocketed as bribes back home.
Today at his press conference, Annuar said Mara's subsidiary, Mara Incorporated (Mara Inc), which was set up in 2008, had begun the process to purchase the property in early 2012.
Mara then approved the purchase at the end of the same year, he said.
"To the best of our knowledge, all due processes in buying the property were followed by Mara Inc.
“But as for allegations that it bought the property at an inflated price, that is something that we need to investigate," Annuar had said, adding that the Melbourne property was purchased before he became chairman.
