‘Rohingya marrying old widows for a new start’

Illegal immigrants become 'husband of citizen' after marriage as pathway to citizenship, says report
Rohingya
KANGAR: Rohingya men fleeing Myanmar have been looking for elderly Muslim widows who can provide them a better life in Malaysia through marriage, according to a news report.
Habibah, a 65-year-old widow, was quoted by The Star as saying that she had married a 45-year-old Rohingya illegal immigrant based on what they could gain out of each other.
After registering a marriage, the illegal status of the husband would be converted to “husband of a citizen”, she was quoted as saying. He would then qualify to be a permanent resident, and eventually to be a citizen.
She said she knew of several other widowed, elderly women who had entered into such marriages.
“Many of these illegal immigrants have relatives here. They can get settled quickly in our village without much problem,” she was reported to have said.
Widows without children are preferred, and such marriages are believed to have become common in Perlis, Kedah and Penang, according to the report.
However, the presence of such Rohingya refugees, many of whom entered Malaysia illegally, has been of concern to some parents, according to a former state assemblyman.
“They worry that the Rohingya men will lure their daughters into marriage, too, or worse still, elope with them,” the unnamed assemblyman was quoted as saying. “Some also worry that over time these Rohingya men, through marriage with locals, get to enjoy similar benefits as the locals,” he said.
Many Rohingya are also known to want the rest of their families to be with them. Khassim and Hussin, who have been in Malaysia for 15 years, said preparations were being made in their village in Myanmar to bring about 300 people to Malaysia.
They would pool their money to buy a boat and hire a captain to sail to Malaysia, as early as September, Hussein was quoted as saying. “There is hope here and it is a Muslim country. We are much happier here,” said Khassim, according to the report.
Rohingya boat people have become a major security concern to Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia, whose navies and coast guards have orders to push them away from territorial waters.
More than 1,000 boat people, comprising Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi migrants, landed in Langkawi last month and are being held in an immigration detention centre in Kedah.
