Solve temple issues, Uthaya pleads to Azmin

Hindraf de facto leader P. Uthayakumar today pleaded with Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali to urgently handle the plight of poor Indians, especially on the problems pertaining to Hindu temples in the state.

He asked if Azmin could be so amicable in dealing with issues regarding the church and the Bible, why can't the PKR deputy president also help the marginalised Hindus.

"Our clients commend your goodself for travelling to Sarawak to personally apologise to the archbishop of Sarawak on the Taman Medan church cross being forcibly brought down.

"But shouldn’t the poor Indians in Selangor also matter, just like all the other communities in Selangor," Uthayakumar (photo) asked in a letter when addressing the problems of Rajakaliamman temple at Kampong Sri Temenggong in Batu Caves.

Uthayakumar, who is acting as the lawyer for the temple committee deputy chairman Sri Ramesh Kannan, claimed that the Selangor state development corporation (PKNS) has blocked the access road to the 60-year old temple and forced it to be relocated under a dangerous high-tension electrical grid area.

Police did not intervene

"A police report was lodged in Selayang but as usual the police did not intervene to stop this crime as the victims are merely poor Indians. This is in clear violation of Section 295 (defiling a place of worship), Section 296 (disturbing a religious assembly), Section 298(A) (causing racial disharmony) and Section 441 (criminal trespass) of the Penal Code.

"Our clients maintain that there is no such thing as an illegal Hindu temple in Malaysia as there are rightly no illegal suraus or mosques by virtue of Article 11 of the Federal Constitution (guaranteeing freedom of religion)," he said.

Uthayakumar also wanted to make an appointment with Azmin (photo) as the said temple comes under his Gombak parliamentary seat.

"Our clients hereby request an urgent appointment with your goodself in the hope that the access road to this temple is not sealed off," he said.

In his letter, Uthayakumar also included an application under the Freedom of Information Enactment 2010 requesting a full list of all Hindu temples and cemetaries in Selangor and the state's policy for the Indians.

"How many has been granted land titles by Pakatan, how many already has land titles, how many have been denied land titles, how many are located adjoining sewerage ponds (like in Kampong Medan, Sentosa, Bandar Putera, Bandar Baru Bangi), high tension electrical grids (in Andalas and Kota Kemuning), telecommunication towers (like the infamous relocated Padang Jawa temple), waste land (like in Section 23), four feet drain (Section 15) and so on," he said.

Malaysiakini is trying to contact PKNS and the Menteri Besar's office for their response.
