WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO NAMEWEE? Low Yat punch-up not coloured by race - rapper
KUALA LUMPUR - In a black-and-white video today, controversial singer-filmmaker Namewee urged Malaysians not to be blinded by the colour of their skin in the wake of a street fight last night following an alleged theft of a mobile phone at Low Yat Plaza.
The Johorean born Wee Meng Chee added his voice to Malaysians weighing in on the incident, saying he only saw thieves, gangsters and the police amid videos being shared online showing the rampage at the popular mall in the national capital.
“People say that the case was about racism.
"For me, I saw in those videos ‘kaum polis’, ‘kaum pencuri’, ‘kaum gengster’, but I never saw ‘kaum lain’,” Namewee said in the video on his Facebook page, using the Malay word for “race”.
He then proceeded to show a G-shock watch, a lighter, a beanie and a pair of boxers and asked viewers what colours the objects were.
“You don’t know right? It’s a G-shock lah...it’s a lighter lah...it’s a beanie lah...it’s a pair of shorts lah…” said Namewee.
“So Malaysian [sic], calm down, be patient.
"The Low Yat issue isn’t about colour, it’s not about race but about thieves, gangsters and police.
"So everyone must calm down and let the police handle it lah.
"Say no to racism. No more fighting,” he added.
A riot broke out at Low Yat Plaza in the city centre last night that reportedly left five people injured after a Malay man was caught by security guards at the complex for allegedly stealing a mobile phone from a Chinese trader and handed to the police Saturday.
The youth later reportedly contacted his friends who reacted by heading to the store where the attempted theft allegedly happened, where they then assaulted the shop workers and vandalised the store with losses estimated at RM70,000, according to national news wire Bernama.
A mob then gathered at the shopping centre last night and fights broke out. - Malay Mail
