Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng and several other DAP members have lodged a police report against Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos over his remarks about a possible riot at Petaling Street on Saturday.
Referring to a news report about Jamal’s statement yesterday, they urged the police to investigate the matter and make arrests.
“We urge the police to investigate the provocative words and threats uttered by Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos in that article.
“We also urge the police to make arrests immediately,” read the police report sighted by Malaysiakini.
The police report was lodged at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this morning.
Meanwhile, The Star quoted the deputy inspector-general of police Noor Rashid Ibrahim (photo) saying Jamal will be called up by the police soon.
“If Jamal has indeed expressed threatening words, if we find him culpable inciting a riot, we will take action. We will call him in very soon,” he was quoted as saying.
He reportedly told reporters that Jamal is currently being investigated under Section 143 of the Penal Code for rioting, but the police also have powers under Section 105 of the Criminal Procedure Code to make arrests to prevent any crime.
In addition, he said the police will be mobilising its personnel in Petaling Street as a precautionary measure.
“We will make all the necessary preparations to ensure that there will be no disturbance and that it's safe to visit Petaling Street,” he said.
Yesterday, Jamal had warned unless the authorities act against counterfeit goods and foreign traders at the popular tourist spot by Friday, a riot may take place.
He said those who would show up are the same group who had attempted to storm Petaling Street during the Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu rally on Sept 16.
“I am the middleman between those who rioted that day (and the ministry). I have conveyed their demands to the authorities and it is now up to the authorities.
“But if the authorities don't take action by Friday and if anything happens, I would not be responsible,” he told reporters yesterday.
The incident on the evening of Sept 16 saw bottles and other projectiles being hurled at police personnel from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) guarding Petaling Street, which they responded by dispersing the group with its water cannons.
Two police personnel were injured in the incident, and the police also made two arrests. -Mkini
