The racist slurs that broke out during the Umno-sanctioned "red shirt" rally on Wednesday showed that the ruling party has resorted to turning Malays into "violent rogues" to survive, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said today.
The former de facto law minister said Umno has abandoned its duty towards the Malays and was instead using them to cow the rest of the country into submission.
"it looks to me that Umno is even willing to turn Malays into violent rogues so they can be used to instil fear in the rest of the populace," Zaid wrote in his latest blog post today.
"These Umno leaders, who had the opportunity to earn their degrees overseas and who have fancy titles of every kind appended to their names, are shameless.
"They are willing to destroy the character and personality of the Malay community just for their political ends."
Zaid added that the "moral degradation" of the Malays had seemingly spread to the Muslim clerics in Malaysia, judging by their silence over the conduct of the rally-goers on Malaysia Day.
He said the recent actions of Umno leaders themselves – including burning effigies of Chinese leaders, claiming racism was fine and that "Cina babi", or Chinese pig, is not a racial slur – also showed they were "no longer capable of being normal people".
Zaid said he believed they could carry out "far more brutal acts of misconduct, violence, immorality, venality and shame" if right-minded Malays did not take concerted action against them.
He called on leading Malay figures critical of the government and Umno to start a new movement that "speaks for Malays and tells them what is good for them".
"It’s alarming to see how the Red Shirt Malays can’t tell the difference between what’s good for them and what’s good for Najib," said Zaid.
Wednesday’s “red shirt” rally or “Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu” organised by a coalition of Malay groups, was held to counter last month’s Bersih 4 rally, which they claimed had insulted the Malay race.
The rally saw racially-charged remarks and placards, with tense moments when participants were upset over questions posed by some journalists.
Riot police were also forced to use water cannons to stop rowdy protesters from entering Petaling Street.
Umno Supreme Council member Tan Sri Annuar Musa had justified the rally's racial tone by declaring himself a racist "based on Islam", while Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos said "Cina babi" was not a slur because the Chinese consume pork.
