The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) today confirmed it had received an investigation paper on allegedly defamatory statements made by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Attorney-General (A-G) Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali said the AGC had received the paper yesterday and was now looking through it to decide on the next course of action.
"AGC can confirm receiving one of the investigation papers involving Dr Mahathir yesterday and is studying its papers," Apandi told The Malaysian Insider.
Of the three, only one was completed and referred to the AGC on October 9 for further action, the deputy prime minister added.
Zahid said all three investigation papers probed Dr Mahathir under Section 500 of the Penal Code, which touches on defamation and carries a two-year jail term, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Dr Mahathir has grown increasingly aggressive in pressuring Datuk Seri Najib Razak to resign following issues involving 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and a RM2.6 billion "donation" channelled into the prime minister's personal accounts.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar previously said Dr Mahathir would be investigated for defamation over statements he made to the media at the Bersih 4 rally at Dataran Merdeka on August 29 and 30.
The former prime minister allegedly said that Umno's division heads had received bribes. However, Khalid denied that police would arrest Dr Mahathir.
