Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar said the ruling coalition will be in trouble if it does not address the decline in votes it is getting.
He said BN had about two years to reverse the downward trend, which he said began with the 2008 general election.
"The 14th general election will be the mother of all elections," he said, in his speech at the MIC Youth National Convention in Menara Felda, Kuala Lumpur today.
He said BN needed to resolve all its internal crises, noting that MIC had just recovered from its own problems.
"Today, we see the rise of MIC once more under Subra," said Khairy, referring to new party president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam.
"We have two and a half years to set aside all inner turmoil. Last year was spent restoring the support of the Indian youth towards MIC and BN.
"I always believe in MIC. Even though other party components exist, the main contender of Indian votes in BN will remain MIC," he said.
Khairy also said the words "MIC Youth" provided the eight key principles for victory in the next general election: moderation, intellectual, compassionate, youthful, organised, unity, trustworthy and hands-on.
He said many were deluded into thinking moderation in politics was unimportant and made them appear weak.
"In Malaysia, there is no other way but moderation. If you want to be a hero among your race, it may make you popular. But will it make you respected?" said Khairy.
He advised the leaders to provide arguments based on intellect, so as to avoid being made a laughing stock among an increasingly intelligent populace.
"Before, you could give speeches without facts, logic, sense and points, and assume that people would accept it.
"Before, you could tell people to be grateful towards BN, otherwise they won't get water or electricity.
"But try that now on those in rural areas, and see what they say. 'Where does the money come from?'," said Khairy.
He added that leaders must empathise with the people, and this was done by putting themselves on the same level as the public and going down to the ground.
He said the trust of the people was vital, and once lost, was almost impossible to recover.
"If you don't understand this, you cannot be an effective leader. Remember these principles," said Khairy.
