Despite being negatively viewed by some people, women using vapes are defending their interest in the e-cigarettes.
Several users interviewed by The Malaysian Insider at the Vape Festival at the Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC) said vaping among women was not wrong, like committing a crime.
"Girls and guys are just the same. If it is bad for girls, why is it not bad for guys too? We have done nothing wrong," said 23-year-old Natasha Elina, who felt it was unfair to look at women who smoke vape differently from men who did the same.
"I used to smoke shisha (hookah or waterpipe), but now I prefer vape. But it is best to refrain from using it in the presence of the older generation," said the young woman, who works as a personal assistant.
Another vape user Farah Hana Syazwani, 21, felt there was no problem for a woman to like vaping.
"It is up to the individual. It looks worse for a woman in headscarf to smoke cigarettes. Better use vapes," she said.
Meanwhile, two other young women said their introduction to vaping, which is becoming a trend, had helped them quit smoking cigarettes.
Tasha Ismadi, 20, who began smoking at 18, said she was glad she had kicked the habit of cigarette-smoking.
"I quit. I like the many different vape flavours. Now I only use vape.
"The effects of cigarette smoke is worst than vape. So what is the problem?" the part-time sales girl at the festival said.
College student Umi Kalsom, 21, said she was addicted to smoking cigarettes for some time, but has recently learned to use vape.
"I have not become addicted to vaping at all, like I was with smoking. Vaping has helped me cut down my cigarette-smoking," she said.
The women also said the different flavours that were available made vape more satisfying to users and also smelled better.
Vaping is also cheaper, cutting cost for chain smokers.
The vape industry is seen as fast growing with many small traders selling e-cigarette parts and flavours. They are not only setting up stalls on five-foot ways and night markets. Some are selling vape online in social networks like Facebook.
