PKR election director disputes Tuan Ibrahim's version of cooperation talks.
PETALING JAYA: A senior official of Parti Keadilan Rakyat has disputed the claim by PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man that the old Pakatan Rakyat alliance was still alive in the form of co-operation between the two parties.
Saifuddin Nasution, PKR elections director, said there was no longer a common policy framework, presidential council or secretariat. “That means Pakatan Rakyat no longer functions,” he was quoted as saying today.
Tuan Ibrahim had said in a statement last night that even without the DAP, which had declared Pakatan Rakyat dead, the alliance still existed, with PAS and PKR co-operating in the coalition governments of Selangor and Kelantan.
His statement comes after a new opposition alliance of Pakatan Harapan was formed by PKR, DAP and the Parti Amanah Negara breakaway party formed by a splinter group of PAS leaders ousted at the party elections earlier this year.
“Pakatan Rakyat without DAP is a political platform, it is still strong and remains until now,” Tuan Ibrahim was quoted as saying, and that PAS and PKR had agreed to strengthen their cooperation. He said PAS would also reach out to other parties in Sabah and Sarawak.
However Saifuddin disputed Tuan Ibrahim’s interpretation of the meeting. Four meetings had taken place with PAS, all chaired by PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, but PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had not attended any.
The meetings did not take any political decisions, Saifuddin said, according to Malaysian Insider. He said he was aware there had been discussion of an electoral pact between the two parties not to contest against each other, but this was not through Pakatan Rakyat.
However, earlier this month, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali held out hopes of PAS teaming up with other opposition parties for a united front against the Barisan Nasional at the next general election.
Azmin, who heads the Selangor state government, has stated that PAS continued to be part of the Selangor coalition.
