If there are rising sentiments and the growing belief that race relations in Malaysia has deteriorated, the reasons are wide and varied, but it may just be that it is really the Malay community that has a large part of the blame to shoulder as they form the majority of the population.
In this country, the Malay-Muslims form the bulk or about 60 per cent of the population. By being in the majority, they should be urged and encouraged by Malay leaders to reach out and engage the other races, namely the Chinese, Ibans, Kadazans and Indians.
By initiating moves to try and better understand and strengthen their relationship with the other races, peace and harmony will be easily achieved in no time. But instead, it has been found that there are pockets of resistance by different segments of the Malay community to forge ties with the other races.
It doesn’t help that there are extremist Malay fringe groups that often harp on racial sensitivities and this gives rise to racial tension and anger among Malaysians but the authorities must be thanked for keeping them in line and watching over their activities.
The Chinese and Indian communities, by being the minority races have their roles to play in improving race relations, but the onus or the prime responsibility should be the majority Malays leading the way. The Chinese and Indians will then be able to reciprocate.
However, there is no fixed formula in achieving successful race relations. But the Malays should not paint themselves into a corner, they should open up and not live in a cloistered and corseted way. The Malays should reach out and build bridges and not build walls with the other races.
By isolating themselves, there is that grave danger that Malays will cause animosity, distrust and suspicion to grow and further damage the fragile state of race relations in this country. This is why the Malays are seen as the people who can actually pave the way to better and improved race relations.
The authorities can do their part by organsing more interaction and creating more opportunities for the Malays to really get to know the other races and thereby foster better inter-racial understanding. Highlighting the commonalities between the races will go a long way in understanding racial diversity.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) government must be given to understand that the way forward – the path to a better and peaceful and prosperous Malaysia – is only possible if it fosters better race relations which will cause the nation to become a model of multi-racial harmony for the world.
But based on the present state where racial polarisation is common in schools, colleges and universities and at the workplace, the BN government needs to urgently go to the ground to mend relations among the races.
While this is a difficult task, it is not an impossible achievement. By making sacrifices, by adopting a give-and-take attitude, by addressing the needs of the poor and downtrodden, irrespective of race or religion, Malaysia can be a shining example of peace and goodwill among the people.
But instead it is disappointing to note the number of social activities and gatherings that seem to be limited only to particular races. While these activities have their place, for various reasons, the emphasis should be on inter-racial participation that creates better understanding between the races.
If all races in this country are allowed to open up and share their culture and beliefs it will open up a better understanding of the races and quell distrust and suspicion, which is visibly present now because each race is virtually unknown to the other.
The government has to lead the Malays to engage and communicate clearly and effectively with the Chinese and Indians and there must be a common framework on which the aim and objective of racial harmony can be achieved.
Healthy and positive race relations in this country will remain a pipe dream unless and until the government begins to put in effort to work out the factors that are a hindering or stumbling block to better race relations.
In this case, there is definitely an imperative and dire need for the government to be brave and honest and fair in dealing with the sticky issues that are proving to be thorns in causing discomfort and unpleasantness between the races.
Only by facing up to the problems and issues that are causing racial tension, and not by sweeping it under the carpet, but by confronting without fear or favor and correcting the racial wrongs and injustice can the country move forward.
Otherwise it will only be a matter of time in the near future when race relations flare up and cause this nation to regress.
