The issuance of MyKads in Sabah to those who are not eligible is still happening and the people are very angry, and getting angrier all the time.
KOTA KINABALU: There appears to be growing consensus in Sabah that life would continue to be tough for the people in the state unless the Sabah IC, the state’s own version of the Malaysian MyKad, becomes a reality. “If there’s empowerment to issue the Sabah IC, the state can safeguard its citizenship rights,” said former Sabah Chief Minister Yong Teck Lee. “No one, under the Sabah IC formula, can attain citizenship status in the state illegally.”
“The Federal and Sabah Constitutions don’t prevent the Sabah Government issuing the Sabah IC. It will be a legal and constitutional document.”
The Sabah IC issue was raised during the RCI hearings in Kota Kinabalu and since then been referred to the Technical Committee on the RCI Report headed by Huguan Siou Joseph Pairin Kitingan, he added.
Briefly, the filtering process inherent in the Sabah IC system will weed out those taking away opportunities in the state from locals, explained Yong who is also Sabah Progressive Party (Sapp) President. “The onus is on those who apply for the Sabah IC to prove that they are entitled to obtain one and eligible to hold it.”
“Only those with the Sabah IC can work in the state or do business. This means no one can take away opportunities from the local people. Only those with the Sabah IC and Malaysians from the peninsula and Sarawak can vote in elections in the state.
Yong was making the case for the Sabah IC during a gathering of activists in inclement weather at Lintasan Deasoka in the Sabah capital. “The issuance of MyKads in Sabah to those who are not eligible was still happening,” claimed Yong. “That’s why the people have become very angry on the issue. In fact, they are getting angrier.”
Yong alleged that not only no action has been taken on the contents of the recent RCI Report on illegal immigrants in Sabah; no action was also being taken on so many other issues affecting the life of the people. “We won in the autonomy debate, and we are also winning on the Borneonisation debate. We will also win the debate on the Sabah IC.”
Yong’s confidence was also endorsed by Star Sabah Chairman Jeffrey Kitingan, United Sabah Alliance (USA) Chairman Mohd Noor Mansor and Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) President Nicholas Gontobon, who were also present at the gathering.
Jeffrey also posted the Sabah IC in Facebook with his picture and another with the picture of his wife, Cecilia Edwin.
