Umno secretary-general dismisses speculation about Muhyiddin and Shafie's ouster.
PUTRAJAYA: Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has dismissed speculation about Tuesday’s Umno Supreme Council meeting, at which the future of deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Shafie Apdal is rumoured to be on the agenda.
Tengku Adnan said the speculation was orchestrated, apparently to cause disunity in the party.
He dismissed a claim that the meeting had been brought forward by three days from Friday because Muhyiddin and Shafie would reportedly be abroad on the day.
“All (council members) have been notified of the date of the meeting. The meeting has been brought forward to give ample time to prepare for the Umno General Assembly from December 8-12,” he told reporters here today.
Speculation about the possible ouster of Muhyiddin and Shafie, who have been critical of party leader Najib Razak, has been heightened on news of Umno disciplinary board investigations into several party leaders for dissent.
Tengku Adnan said a report on the investigation would be handed to the council for a decision.
“It is left to the supreme council to take action or otherwise … that’s only rumours going around,” he said.
