Special meeting on Wednesday to consider line-up for general assembly speeches
BAGAN DATOH: The Umno Supreme Council will decide on Wednesday whether to allow out-of-favour deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Shafie Apdal to make winding-up speeches at the end of the party’s general assembly next week.
Their positions have been uncertain since they fell out of favour with party leader Najib Razak in July. Muhyiddin has been barred from opening the delegates’ meeting of the Youth and Wanita wings, a traditional chore of the deputy president.
Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Muhyiddin and Shafie would also attend Wednesday’s meeting. Muhyiddin had previously confirmed he would attend the Umno general assembly, even if he would not be allowed to deliver the winding-up speech.
“We hear what has been voiced out by Umno leaders. We hope the special meeting on Dec 9 will make a decision on it,” he told reporters after a constituency function today. He was here to open the Bagan Datoh Water Sports Festival.
Zahid said he would help obtain a RM10 million allocation needed to expand the Bagan Datoh jetty. Various activities are held at the three-day carnival, including beach football, cooking demonstration, traditional games, and decorative boats.
