She suspects that it could be the work of her political enemies, adding that the banners put up were without permits issued by the Penang Island City Council.
GEORGE TOWN: DAP state assemblywoman Yap Soo Huey has claimed her political enemies were behind the banners portraying her as an uncompromising opponent of the ambitious 6.5km undersea tunnel project.
The Pulau Tikus representative denied she had ever put up the banners, which were found across the island early this week.
The banners featured her portrait along with a quote that read:
“Penang doesn’t need an undersea tunnel. The project, the land swap deal, there’s something fishy”.
Yap has lodged a police report on the banners, which she found at various locations on the island, including Sungai Ara, Jalan Scotland and Tanjung Bungah.
She suspects that it could be the work of her political enemies, adding that the banners put up were without permits issued by the Penang Island City Council.
Yap has highlighted concerns regarding the proposed RM6.3 billion undersea tunnel and land reclamation matters at the state assembly since she was elected in 2013.
She however said she was never gagged by either her party or the Pakatan Harapan state government from asking questions or making statements on the issue.
“I have never stated that there was something fishy either at the state assembly or elsewhere,” Yap told newsmen at her constituency service centre.
Yap stressed that she had always demanded to know the state agency tasked with monitoring and ensuring that reclamation projects were carried out in compliance with environmental guidelines.
She has also questioned the rationale and the reason for the land reclamation proposed under the Seri Tanjung Pinang II (STP2) project, demanding to know the contractual clauses compelling the state government to continue with the project.
Yap is demanding the state government reveal details of projects to be built on proposed reclaimed land in Gurney Drive and wondered on whether public consultation would be held soon on it.
