Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak should not take credit for the party's success in developing the country.
Commenting on Najib's policy speech, Dr Mahathir said Najib was acting as if the party's success was his own.
"I agree with the part in the speech where he said Umno succeeded to the point that doctors can earn a livelihood. That is Umno, not the leaders. Umno succeeded.
"But don't take credit for it as if it were your own successes. Even I never took any credit," Dr Mahathir said when approached by reporters at PWTC.
Najib earlier today told the assembly he wished all Malaysians would be grateful for what Umno had achieved for the country.
Najib previously highlighted various government programmes and statistics to rebut Dr Mahathir's allegations that the country was in dire straits because of financial controversies involving state-owned investment firm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
The party president, who is also prime minister and finance minister, has repeatedly said 1MDB's debts are being resolved through a restructuring exercises that include selling its assets.
