Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal says he agrees with party No. 2 Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s call for president Datuk Seri Najib Razak to ‘take a rest’ pending investigations into 1MDB and RM2.6 billion transferred into the latter’s personal accounts. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Najjua Zulkefli, December 9, 2015.
Authorities will have a tough time investigating alleged financial scandals involving Datuk Seri Najib Razak while he remains prime minister, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal says.
This was why Shafie believed there was nothing wrong in urging the party president to step down or go on leave pending the investigations into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and the RM2.6 billion transferred into Najib’s personal accounts.
“It’s not wrong for us to ask this, so that investigations can be carried out,” Shafie told a joint interview with several news organisations in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
“Because if the investigation is carried out, normally, it’s tough for them to get further information because he’s sitting as the prime minister.”
He said then when asked whether he agreed with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s call on Monday for Najib to “take a rest” so that investigations can be carried out freely.
Shafie, who attended Muhyiddin’s special address that night, said he respected the deputy president’s views and felt it was a good suggestion.
He said the authorities needed to probe how many accepted the money and who were they.
“You have to probe, how many received it? Was it for Umno? If the money was for Umno, why was it not discussed among the Supreme Council?
“What are we using this money for, what direction are we headed with this money we are using? You have to explain the details, what the RM2.6 billion was used for.”
He said he was unhappy with the answers Najib had given so far on both 1MDB and the donation, and he would continue to ask questions as long as no answers were forthcoming.
“I’m asking for the real story. That person doesn’t want to reveal the identity of the donor. But why is it so hard for him (the donor) to reveal himself, if he is willing to donate that much money?”
On 1MDB, Shafie said group president Arul Kanda Kandasamy failed to answer his questions when he was in the Cabinet.
He said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s explanation in the Dewan Rakyat last week also lacked details.
Muhyiddin and Shafie were sacked from the Cabinet in July following their criticism of Najib’s management of the 1MDB saga, but they both remain party deputy president and vice-president, respectively.
