KUALA LUMPUR - Discomfort momentarily descended on the Umno general assembly here when Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his estranged deputy president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, turned up mere minutes apart.
Muhyiddin arrived at 8.30am to little fanfare from Umno delegates congregating at the entrance of the Dewan Tun Razak, save for a short photo session and selfies with reporters and photographers.
Some Barisan Nasional leaders such as MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam did not greet Muhyiddin and instead made his way straight into the assembly hall.
But things became uncomfortable when Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi arrived, and proceeded to smile and shake hands with Muhyiddin before a short photo op session.
Umno leaders and members were silent and merely looked on as the two spoke in hushed voices and whispers.
When Prime Minister Najib arrived two minutes later, a loud “Hidup Najib!” was heard before he and Muhyiddin walked together to inspect the parade march by Umno members outside the hall.
It is understood that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had arrived much earlier and went straight to the Dewan Tun Razak.
Muhyiddin is facing possible sanctions by Umno following his speech on Monday that continued his criticism of Najib.
