Malacca 'sultan' probed for sedition

Self-proclaimed Malacca sultan Raja Noor Jan Shah Tuah is investigated under the Sedition Act, said Malacca police chief Chuah Ghee Lye.

This is following a report made by the Malacca government on Noor Jan's claims that he is the sultan of the state.

"There was a report made at the Malacca police headquarters, so we opened investigations and he is now being probed under Sedition Act for claiming he is Malacca's sultan," Chuah told Malaysiakini.

This is Noor Jan's second time being investigated by the police. with the earlier investigation for allegedly falsifying a letter from the International Court of Justice's recognising him as the Malacca sultan, he said.

"We'll see how it goes. If there are similar elements, we'll combine the investigations," Chuah said.

This comes after a picture of an event where Noor Jan purportedly bestowed awards to several individuals and activists were circulated on social media.

Rani Kulup: Other sultans should award me, too

Among those who received the award was Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah Malaysia (MJMM) president Abdul Rani Kulup Abdullah, who is well-known for lodging police reports while in self-designed para-military garb.

Noor Jan reportedly exercised his legitimacy as a sultan when bestowing the award, even though the Malacca state government denies his claim to the throne.

As president of MJMM, Abdul Rani said he defends all Malay rulers.

However, he added that he did not think he would get the attention of the Malacca sultan through a police report he lodged to defend the sultan's honour.

Asked about the dispute on the self-proclaimed sultan's legitimacy, Abdul Rani gave a simple answer.

"If they say the Malacca sultan is not legitimate, then tell the other sultans to give an award to me.

"I have done a lot for the other sultans, including sacrificing for the people, country and Islam," he said. Mkini
