Subra promises permanent solution to unilateral conversions

MIC president Dr S Subramaniam has given his assurance that there will be a permanent solution to the problem of unilateral conversion of minors.
He noted that this is because the relevant parties involved are all on the same page regarding this issue.
“Because everybody is on the same page - the prime minister, the cabinet, our committee, and the attorney-general (AG) - I believe that we will be able to come to some solution, a permanent solution, to this issue,” he said.
Subramaniam was speaking at a press conference at Batu Caves today, where he was asked for an update on the government's efforts to end unilateral conversion of minors.
He replied that he had met with AG Mohamed Apandi Ali to discuss the legal issues involved, and provided MIC's views on the matter.
“I have given a summary of the legal issues, which we feel are contributing to the present problem. We have explained to him the need for a holistic solution, which cannot be obtained unless we amend some of the laws in this country.
“I think all of us have agreed that there is a need for an amendment of the laws, so we will be taking it along that way - which are the laws we can amend with ease, so that we can give holistic, implementable solutions,” he added.
He said he also told Apandi of Gerakan and MCA's views on the issue, so that he would know what to expect when he meets the cabinet committee which was set up to deal with unilateral conversions.
Subramaniam, who is also the health minister, is a member of the cabinet committee.
Other members are Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz, de facto law minister Nancy Shukri, Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai, and two Ministers in the Prime Minister's Department, Jamil Khir Baharom and Joseph Kurup.
Asked when would Apandi provide his feedback from the discussions, Subramaniam said the attorney-general would do so when he meets with the committee, but did not mention any dates. -Mkini
