Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid and his deputy Chong Sin Woon have been giving contradictory statements in relation to the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), DAP lawmaker claimed today.
"During the Sarawak polls, Chong had claimed that the government is set to recognise UEC soon.
"He said 'we are very close'," said DAP's Rasah MP Teo Kok Seong at the Parliament lobby.
The UEC is administered by independent Chinese high schools throughout Malaysia, but is not currently recognised by the federal government.
Chong was reported as saying that the "the journey towards the realisation is only a mile away now".
However, Teo said the minister gave a different answer in the parliamentary written reply yesterday.

In his reply, Mahdzir said the UEC has failed to fulfil the requirement outlined in the National Education Policy as stipulated in the Education Act 1996.
"This is a slap in the face of the deputy minister by the minister," claimed Teo (photo), who asked about the latest development of UEC following Chong's announcement that the government is getting close to recognising it.
He expects the minister to at least enlighten them on the ministry's preparation and the progress.
Teo also asked Chong to reveal the relevant details related to the matter.
