IPOH: Barely three months after four people were killed at the 264.2km mark of the North-South Expressway (NSE) near the Menora Tunnel, another fatal accident along the deadly stretch caused the death of two women.
The accident yesterday morning happened at the 257km mark of the NSE.
Five people travelling in the car were heading towards Kuala Kangsar when the driver lost control and crashed into a divider, said Perak traffic chief Supt Wan Jamil Wan Chik.
Apart from the two dead, the others, all men, suffered serious injuries. The dead have been identified as Syahrul Amie Shahriman, 28, and Nabilah Syahmimi Zulkifli, 21.
“Amie died at the scene while Syahmimi died while being treated at the Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun,” said Supt Wan Jamil.
“Initial investigations revealed that the victims were on their way to Kuala Kangsar when Amie was believed to have lost control of her car and crashed into the side divider at about 4.15am.”
The injured were identified as Mohd Azwan Mohd Ibrahim, 23, Mohd Harussani Hassan, 20, and Jushairie Jamal, 19.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
On March 4, the charred remains of Rosmani Abd Ghani, 65, Azhar Abdul Rahim, 43, Aizat Azhar, 18, and Danial Azhar, 13, were found trapped in their badly burnt car.
The family members were on their way to the Royal Military College in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur, to collect Aizat’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia results.
Rescue personnel only discovered the Honda Accord and the bodies at about 11am on that day when removing the wreckage of an accident that took place on March 3.
A trailer had crashed into the divider and burst into flames on the south-bound lane of the expressway at about 1am on March 3.
PLUS Malaysia Bhd, the operator of the NSE, said it had taken safety measures to reduce accidents near Menora Tunnel, including the installation of rumble strips that alerts road users to slow down when driving downhill and putting up a sufficient number of road signs.
