Following BN's overwhelming victories in the recent twin by-elections, former deputy prime minister Musa Hitam said he would call for a snap general election next year if he were the prime minister.
"The twin by-elections were held in the midst of massive (opposition) attacks on the BN government and its leaders. This was never faced by BN (in previous elections). Moreover, both Umno and BN then were not stable internally.
"(But in the twin polls) Umno still won with unexpected majority votes," he is quoted as saying by Sin Chew Daily today.
BN won Sungai Besar with 9,191-majority votes while it garnered 6,969-majority votes in Kuala Kangsar.
Musa said BN should capitalise on the momentum generated by the by-elections and call for snap polls next year given the huge support it had gained.
He also noted that the opposition lacked cohesion and direction compared to the 2013 general election, when three parties united under Pakatan Rakyat.
Under such circumstances, he said the opposition could only rely on former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to reach out to the people, as its former leader Anwar Ibrahim is in jail.
As a result, he said, this strategy could not work effectively.
He said the message sent out by Mahathir on the campaign trail in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar was too huge for the voters to absorb.
"If you ask me, I will urge those who are really old not to continue to get involved in politics. I also feel sad when we have no other choice besides Najib," he added.-Mkini
