Own up or face action, holders of fake titles warned

Malacca to go after those using fake honorary titles awarded by bogus sultans.
Idris Haron
PETALING JAYA: Malacca is going after dignitaries with fake honorary titles.
It is giving them a grace period to declare their fake titles or they will risk legal action, said Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron.
He pointed out that action can be taken against those conferred illegal honorary titles by bogus sultans and said the government was aware of such individuals.
This follows the enforcement of the Insignia and Prevention of Misusing Unauthorised Names Enactment 1981 (amendment 2016) during the state legislative meeting on Monday, Star Online reported.
He said that under the amended by-law, the recipients could be produced in court and can be fined up to RM500,000 or jailed five years or both upon conviction.
Idris warned that individuals who failed to declare and had court action taken against them would also have their genuine honorary awards conferred by the Malacca Governor revoked.
The report stated that motorists were prohibited from displaying any insignias or honorary titles received through dubious means from now on.
Those with titles like Datuk and Datuk Seri need to get written permission from the state secretary’s office to display insignias showing them on their vehicles.
