PAS: Stricter syariah punishment option for states if Hudud Bill passed

All states can opt to implement stricter Syariah court punishments if the so called 'hudud bill' is passed said, PAS ulama chief Mahfodz Mohamed said.
"If (amendments to) Act 355 (Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act) are passed, it's not just for Kelantan.
"All states can implement (the amendments)," Mahfodz told reporters after a prayer session in which PAS asked for victory in the upcoming Sungai Besar by-election,
He said this when asked to reply to Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz's snide remarks earlier today that Kelantan wants harsher Syariah punishment because Muslims there are not afraid of existing sentences.
Mahfodz said such remarks were unnecessary, and said by insulting Kelantan, Nazri had also insulted Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia who allowed the Bill to be debated.

He also rubbished the notion that Kelantanese were more prone to crime.
"Crime happens everywhere, even in Johor. Maybe there's more in Kelantan because we're close to the Thai border," he said.
The long-running hudud issue returned to the spotlight after a motion by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to table a Private Member's Bill to increase the punishment syariah courts can mete out, was fast tracked in Parliament two weeks ago.
The bill makes the necessary amendments to federal law to allow for the implementation of hudud in Kelantan. -Mkini
