Police quiz Aziz Bari over night programme outside UIA in 2014

Constitutional law expert Abdul Aziz Bari was today questioned by police over his involvement in a night programme held outside of Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIA) almost two years ago.
Abdul Aziz’s lawyer, Segambut lawmaker Lim Lim Eng said police reports had been lodged against his client after the event but that the investigating officer had initially stopped all investigations pertaining to it.
“The IO told me that all investigations under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) were stopped after (Pandan MP) Rafizi (Ramli) and five others filed an application to set aside a charge under the PAA.
“But after the High Court dismissed their application last month, all investigations pertaining to the PAA have been revived and that includes the investigation against Abdul Aziz,” said Lim to Malaysiakini.
Rafizi was charged under the PAA for organising a Blackout 505 rally held at Padang Merbok in 2013.
Meanwhile, Kampung Tunku state assemblyperson Lau Weng San who, together with Lim, Abdul Aziz’s wife and Selangor DAP committee member Edry Faizal Yusof had accompanied Abdul Aziz at the Gombak district police headquarters today, said that the questioning lasted for 30 minutes.
“We don’t rule out the possibility that he may be summoned in the future for more of his statements to be recorded,” he said.
The incident in November 2014 saw UIA turning off its lights and locking its main gate to stop the event which was supposed to be held on campus.

Scores of students were, however, forced to gather outside the campus gates and they were told that it was due to the rally which was set to feature student activist Fahmi Zainol as well as Abdul Aziz.
The former UIA law professor had then told Malaysiakini that campus security barred him from entering the campus in Gombak, citing “security” reasons.
Abdul Aziz, who is also a DAP member, was forced to leave the university for remarks critical of the Selangor sultan. -Mkini
