Proposal for Johor-Singapore water taxi service

Residents around the area hail the water taxi idea as brilliant as it can cut down travelling time and reduce congestion on the Johor Causeway.

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Government’s proposal to introduce a water taxi terminal will provide an alternative for commuters facing traffic congestion at the Johor Causeway and the Second Link.
Furthermore, commuters will be able to save time as the trip to Changi, Singapore, from Kong Kong Ferry Terminal in Pasir Gudang will be much shorter, taking only 20 minutes.
Bernama has found that the proposed water taxi was well-received by residents around Kong Kong and it was even suggested that the proposal include ferries with car-carrying capacity.
Kong Kong Eco-Tourism Manager Salbiah Yahya said if the water taxi terminal idea materialises, it would attract more visitors, especially Singaporean tourists.
“To me, this is a brilliant idea. The state government’s proposal is important and can contribute to the development of this area.”
For villager Halijah Mahadi, 56, the opening of the water taxi terminal would provide business opportunities and raise the income of residents living around the area.
“I see a lot of benefits, especially increased economic activity which will create employment opportunities in Kong Kong.”
Meanwhile, Habibah Jantan, 62, said the water taxi could cut down travelling time and reduce congestion on the Johor Causeway.
“My husband is sick and requires treatment in a Singapore hospital. So I often travel to take him for his appointments there.
“It can be a problem for us when the roads are jammed as the journey takes so long.”
State Tourism, Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman Tee Siew Kiong said: “Johor is at a strategic location with the advantage of having 14 entry points via land, water and air to facilitate tourist arrivals.
“I think the menteri besar’s proposal on having water taxi service from Kong Kong Ferry Terminal to Changi is very appropriate in boosting the tourism industry.”
Tee said the water taxi service would also bring a unique experience to tourists visiting the state.
“I also believe with the service available, traffic congestion on the Causeway and Second Link will be reduced.
“The water taxi service will definitely be an additional option for travellers who commute between Johor and Singapore,” he added.
The proposal put forward by Johor Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin is expected to be sent to the Federal Government for approval.
