KUALA LUMPUR: City police put a spoke in the wheels of a syndicate’s operation when they seized 33 cloned luxury cars between 2015 and last year.
The vehicles, which included BMW, Mercedes Benz and Mini Cooper, and worth about RM3 million, were seized in an operation dubbed, “Ops Lejang Khas”.
A total of 33 people who owned the cloned vehicles were detained to facilitate investigations, said Dang Wangi police chief ACP Mohd Sukri Kaman.
According to initial investigations, the buyers, aged between 25 and 40, were attracted by the price of the cloned high-end vehicles, which were cheaper than the market price.
“The syndicate sold luxury cars, priced between RM20,000 and RM30,000 each… Think about it, who would sell BMW cars for dirt cheap prices?
“There must be something wrong with the vehicle,” he told a media conference at the Dang Wangi police headquarters here today.
Sukri said efforts were under way to track down syndicate members responsible for the sale of cloned vehicles to the public.
“The syndicate goes all out to advertise cloned vehicles on the internet as well as through the social web,” he added.
According to Sukri, the syndicate was believed to have smuggled scrapped and cloned vehicles from Singapore, which were sold cheaper in this country.
“We believe that some of the seized vehicles still possessed legitimate registration numbers and road tax,” he said. -FMT
