Have ruling on where 20 sen plastic bag charge goes, Selangor told

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said he supports the "no plastic bag" policy implemented by the Selangor government.
However, he said the state should have a ruling in place on where the 20 sen per plastic bag charge goes to.
"No plastic bag is good, but there must be a certain ruling on the sale (of plastic bags) and where the money goes.
"Spending 20 sen on one plastic bag is nothing to us. The controversy arose when they (traders and retailers) received quite a lot of money," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Selangor had first implemented the policy once a week since 2010 and expanded it to seven days statewide beginning this year.
The state government had encouraged retailers and traders to use the 20 sen collected from consumers for environment and wildlife protection.
The state government, however, is powerless to audit retailers and traders who charge the 20 sen.
Yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali said he had instructed state executive council member Elizabeth Wong, who oversees environment and consumer affairs, to explain the criticism over the 20 sen plastic bag charge.
Noting that it is not a federal government policy, Wan Junaidi said the ministry might consider implementing a similar policy, since Selangor is a "big and influential state".
"Since Selangor has started it, this is a big state and influences a large number of people in Selangor and Federal Territory, we will think of (the need to) formulate the specific policy," he said.
Wan Junaidi said any policy proposed by the ministry requires the consent of the federal government.- Mkini
