Why no action on Gerakan man for religious school remark, CM asks

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has queried the authorities on why no action has been taken against a Gerakan leader for his statement on religious schools.
Lim said the remark by Gerakan vice-president Dominic Lau was insulting to religious schools.
"If a Pakatan Harapan leader were to make such a remark, action would have been taken against him or her," Lim told reporters in Penang today.
"However, there was no action against the Gerakan leader," he added.
"We can see now who is trying to disunite the nation or cause disharmony and ill-feelings," he said.
Lau (photo) retracted his statement on religious schools last week and and apologised for it.
Lau was quoted in Free Malaysia Today (FMT) as urging the government to review fundings for religious schools.
In apologising and retracting the statement, Lau said it was made in the best interest of peace and stability.
Lim said others had also apologised or retracted their remarks but still faced action by the police.
"There were people who tweeted against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and apologised later, but still faced police action.
"This is certainly double standard and selective prosecution," said Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general.

Lim probed under Sedition Act
Lim himself was questioned by police from Kuala Lumpur last Thursday for urging Gerakan, MCA, MIC and SUPP to leave BN because it endorsed PAS’ motion to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355).
He described the investigation under the Sedition Act as "frivolous".
In his statement, which drew flak from several quarters, Lau said his main concern was to call on the government to consider heightened measures on the possibility of penetration of extremist ideas and views from external influences into religious schools.
He explained that his remark was based on Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's statement last July that the Home Ministry would be monitoring religious institutions to ensure that they are not infiltrated by IS activities.- Mkini
