PETALING JAYA: An alleged Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) recruitment advertisement featuring a Singaporean actor in full police gear and which was shared on social media, is a hoax.
PDRM corporate communications head Asmawati Ahmad confirmed this with FMT, saying that the idea of using a Singaporean actor in any of its advertisements was absolutely nonsensical.
“Why do we need actors, when we have a strong 130,000 personnel in the police force,” she told FMT, adding that the police had always used its own personnel in such ads.
The “recruitment ad” said to have been uploaded on Facebook on Jan 16, had initially been mocked and shared by Singapore netizens before starting to gain some attention among Malaysians.
A Singaporean-based website, Mothership.sg, quoting “Jawatan Kosong Kerajaan” Facebook page, claimed that the local police force had used Singaporean actor Elvin Ng in its recruitment advertisement.
The fake recruitment advertisement has since been slammed by netizens, with many labelling it a joke.
Asmawati said that it was irresponsible for the Singapore-based website to publish the article without verifying the facts with PDRM.
“That is very uncalled for. They should have called us and verified the details before writing such an article.”
She also dismissed the fake police recruitment ad on Facebook as a bad joke and done with the intention of discrediting the Malaysian police.
“But, I think the public is smart enough to see that this is yet another attempt to undermine the police force.
“Any sensible Malaysian would easily see that it is a bad joke and a hoax.”
The police haven’t commenced investigations, but are currently monitoring the fake recruitment ad closely.
