China envoy visits Forest City amid debate over project

China ambassador to Malaysia Huang Huikang has visited Forest City in Johor Baru amid the ongoing debate over the housing project, which involves investment from China.
According to China Press, Huang arrived at the project site about 10am today.
He was welcomed by Yu Runze, the chief strategy officer for property developer Country Garden, who thanked the ambassador for visiting the project during a moment of “crisis”.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad has repeatedly claimed that the project could undermine Malaysia's sovereignty.
At a press conference later, Yu explained that he chose the term “crisis” because there have been numerous false allegations against the project.
For example, he said, the allegation that 700,000 Chinese nationals would occupy Forest City is based on the estimation of the future population, which included workers and tourists from all over the world.
He also clarified that Forest City is not a total Chinese investment project, pointing out that Malaysians have a 40 percent stake.
Yu revealed that 75 percent of their staff are Malaysians, including the company's vice-chairperson.
Furthermore, he said, building materials are provided by Malaysian firms, which also handle land reclamation.
On several sales centres being closed in China, Yu said these have reopened on March 13.
However, he refused to comment on China’s capital flight control policy.- Mkini
