KLANG: A lorry driver was killed while two others were seriously injured following a freak accident involving three lorries along the South Klang Valley Epressway (SKVE).
The impact of the accident caused a container hauled by one of the lorries to come loose and smash into the lorry’s cabin, severing the body of the driver in half.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the incident occurred at 8.52am yesterday.
“We received a distress call and dispatched fire engines from the Banting, Port Klang and Shah Alam fire stations and 23 firemen to the scene.
“The lorries were hauling chemical, cooking gas tanks and a container.
“When we arrived at the scene, we found the container lorry driver’s body severed, with the top half inside the cabin and the other half among the gas tanks,” he said yesterday.
He said the area had to be cordoned off while the Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) attended to the lorry hauling toluene chemical, which was leaking.
Toluene is a colourless, water-insoluble liquid that smells like paint thinner.
It is widely used as a solvent in some types of paint thinner, contact cement and model aeroplane glue, which if inhaled, could cause neurological harm.
The spokesman said the other two drivers were taken to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang for medical treatment.
He added that the ill-fated container truck was heading towards Klang with the other two going in the opposite direction.
