Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz has offered the Millenium hall in Padang Rengas, Perak, as the venue for his debate with Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby, the Padang Rengas MP said he has also fixed the date - March 25 - and time - 3pm - for the debate.
"He (Mahathir) challenged me. Umno has given me permission (to debate). I am only debating to defend the prime minister," said the minister.
Mahathir had challenged Nazri to debate him on issues such as 1MDB, the East Coast Rail Line (ECRL) project and even the BMF scandal, which occurred during the former premier's tenure.
Following this, Nazri accepted the challenge on an unconditional basis, saying that he was willing to debate even if his supporters are barred from attending.
Dr M looks forward to debate
Responding to this, Mahathir's aide said arrangements are being made for the debate to be held at Nazri's constituency, where the former premier is slated to attend a function on March 25.
The aide said the former premier is also looking forward to the debate.
Prior to the debate dare, Mahathir and Nazri had challenged each other to contest in Langkawi and Padang Rengas respectively.
This ignited speculation that the 91-year-old former premier is planning to make a comeback in the next election.
However, Mahathir later clarified that he had no intention of contesting, and issued the debate challenge instead.
Yesterday, Second Finance Minister Johari Abdul Ghani said the debate concerning 1MDB is not related to the government.
He said the 1MDB audit report has been prepared, and the matter has been extensively discussed by the Public Accounts Committee and through parliamentary questions.- Mkini
