Opposition Leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail called on the government today to reveal the two advisers appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to advise the Election Commission (EC) on its redelineation exercise.
Wan Azizah said the appointment of the two advisers is a constitutional requirement for the redelineation exercise under Article 115(2) of the Federal Constitution.
"This is important as the advice of the two experts form the basis of the redelineation process," she said in a statement.
Article 115(2) of the Federal Constitution states that in exercising its function of making recommendations for the delimitation of constituencies for elections, the EC shall seek the advice of two officers of the federal government with special knowledge of the topography of, and the distribution of the population in the unit of review for federal elections.
It adds that the two officers shall be selected by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Wan Azizah urged Putrajaya and the EC to be transparent on the matter.
"As this is a constitutional requirement, it needs to be properly clarified.
"I urge that the redelineation process be halted until this is clarified to the people," she said.
Wan Azizah said if the EC failed to clarify the matter, she would seek answers from the monarch.-Mkini
