PUTRAJAYA: A woman today claimed that her nine-year-old son was punched by a teacher at a national school here, causing him to feel dizzy and nauseous and making him terrified to go back to school.
Nur Syaheerah Sutchira Abdullah said the alleged incident happened in class on July 11, when her son who is in Standard Three was hit for wrongly answering a question in English.
She said the teacher struck her child’s head until it caused him to fall backwards and hit his hip on the corner of a table.
“The punch caused my son to feel disoriented and he was also told to stand until the class ended,” Syaheerah told a press conference here today.
She added that checks by a doctor found that Adam Mikhael Mubashir was affected by the beating which caused shaking around the brain. The boy also felt pain at his waist as it had hit the table when he fell.
“I am distressed that my son was inflicted in such a manner,” she said.
“I met the principal but was told that the teacher and my son would be monitored. No action has been taken against the teacher and it was only that my son was given counselling.”
Syaheerah said the trauma from the incident was so severe that Adam was fearful of returning to school.
“The principal only informed us that the teacher would be transferred to another class and would not teach my son’s class,” she said.
She said the teacher would still be in the same school and be able to meet her son again.
Worried about her boy’s safety, Syaheerah lodged a report at the Putrajaya district police headquarters on Friday.
“Adam told me not to tell the school authorities as he was scared of the teacher,” she said.
Putrajaya police chief Asst Comm Rosly Hasan confirmed that the report had been received. He said the case was being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
“The case is still under investigation,” he told FMT.
FMT’s attempts to get clarification from the school authorities were unsuccessful as the principal refused to comment and did not want to be disturbed by the media.
