DID the Judicial and Legal Service Commission propose that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief be sacked for allegedly having an affair with a married woman?
That was the crux of a statement issued tonight by Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, the lawyer to Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He drew attention to an article posted on Free Malaysia Today (FMT) yesterday that detailed in some depth the decision by the commission on a case that has been in the news since videos emerged showing Dzulkifli Ahmad with a married woman in Bali, Indonesia.
Haniff claimed that the article had since been pulled down from the news portal.
However, he appended text from the article in his statement.
The text detailed a proposal from the Judicial and Legal Service Commission to remove Dzulkifli as MACC chief.
Quoting sources, the FMT article claimed that the commission had asked the prime minister to advise the king to remove Dzulkifli from the post.
The commission made the proposal following allegations of misconduct by Dzulkifli, who is currently being investigated by police.
Dzulkifli is being investigated under Section 498 of the Penal Code for enticing a married woman with the intent of having illicit intercourse.
He was seconded to the MACC position from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) and remained a member of the AGC, and these officers fell under the commission’s purview, said the article.
Before he took up the MACC post, Dzulkifli headed the AGC’s National Revenue Recovery Enforcement Team. He has been with the AGC since 1993 and served in various posts.
In his statement, Haniff asked whether the article was pulled down at the request of Najib Razak’s administration.
“It is the responsibility of the management of FMT to inform the public as to whether the article was taken down due to pressure from the Najib administration. ”
Haniff claimed that members of the commission who were contacted by the article’s writer did not deny the story.
“The reporter contacted commission secretary Zainal Abidin Ahmad and Chief Secretary to the Government Ali Hamsa, but he did not receive any response from them.”
He said a text message sent to Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali, who is also a member of the commission, elicited a response.
He said Apandi’s text message to the reporter read: “You should ask the chairman or the secretary of the commission… People have the right to know, right to ask and right to be informed…”
In short, Haniff said, no one contacted by the article’s writer denied the story.
“In fact, Apandi indirectly agreed that the public has the right to know and seek answers regarding Dzulkifli’s current status.”
