PETALING JAYA: The bilateral agreement for the Rapid Transit System (RTS) link between Johor Bahru and Woodlands in Singapore will be signed during the upcoming Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat on Jan 16 in the island republic.
Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said the project, near the Johor Causeway, was expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
Upon completion, the system will be able to carry 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
The 4km journey between the stations in Woodlands and Bukit Chagar will take five minutes.
“We hope the RTS project will commence quickly as it can help in reducing congestion at the Causeway, especially for the convenience of Johoreans working in Singapore.
“It will also boost Malaysia’s economy,” Liow said after an award ceremony organised by the Rotary Clubs in Malaysia here today.
He said once operational, the existing “Shuttle Tebrau” service, currently operated by KTM Berhad, would cease operations within six months.
The project was proposed in May 2010 as an alternative for Johor Causeway users, who number between 80,000 and 100,000 every day.
On another matter, Liow said the new Subang-Skypark Terminal Extension Project was expected to be operational by April.
It will provide rail-based public transport connecting commuters from Subang Jaya to the SkyPark Terminal at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport.
On the Klang Valley Double Track (KVDT) Phase 1, the transport minister said the construction, which started in November 2015, was now 48% completed. -FMT
