PKR slams police inaction on Wangsa Maju dubious voters report

The police have been slammed by PKR for their inaction over reports on 1,429 dubious entries in the Wangsa Maju electoral roll.
PKR treasurer-general Tan Yee Kew said she accompanied Wangsa Maju voter S Raveentheran, who lodged four police reports last August, October and November at the Wangsa Maju police headquarters.
Aside from taking a statement from Raveentheran, Tan said, police have failed to inform them of any developments in the case.
“There has been no serious action from the police… even though we made the reports five months ago.
“We want to know if the perpetrator (of these dubious entries) has been arrested.
“If there has been no investigation by the police, we want to know why.
“If there was an investigation, can we know the extent and development of the investigation?” Tan told a press conference at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.
Raveentheran’s two letters requesting meetings with and answers from the police have also gone unanswered.
Tan added that should the police fail to provide a satisfactory answer within a week, they would lodge a complaint with the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC), urging it to probe the conduct of the police in regard to this case.
Door-to-door surveys
The police reports allege that a total of 1,429 people had given “false information” on their addresses to either the National Registration Department (NRD) or the Election Commission (EC).
The reports also cite Section 177 of the Penal Code, which states it is a punishable offence to give false information to a public servant.
Malaysiakini has seen the police reports.
Tan said that the 1,429 figure was confirmed through cross-checking the names and addresses on the electoral roll with in-person visits to these locations.
“We have confirmed from our door-to-door surveys that the people listed in the electoral roll (as living in Wangsa Maju) never actually lived there.
“And the homeowners (we asked) did not know of such people living at their addresses either,” added Tan.
'Very serious allegations'
Also present at the press conference today was PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, who echoed Tan’s call for the police to take these reports seriously.
“These are very serious allegations. EC chief Mohd Hashim Abdullah admitted it himself that the police should investigate claims of electoral roll fraud.
“Why has there been no action from the police till now?” Nurul Izzah asked.
Mohd Hashim was previously quoted in a Bernama report as confirming that the commission received a letter from the Wangsa Maju police headquarters on Jan 17 about a report on dubious voters.
He had said the EC was willing to offer its full cooperation on the police investigation.
The Wangsa Maju constituency now has 79,000 voters, Tan said.
In the previous election, PKR’s Tan Kee Kwong won the seat against Umno’s Mohd Shafei Abdullah, on a thin margin of 5,511 votes.- Mkini
