Former Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has condemned the act of several cybertroopers who sexually harassed her assistant on social media.
This came after the image of her aide, who held the placard "Screw you. We are anti-Fake News Bill; Unfair redelineation. Tolak penipuan SPR" at yesterday's protest against the controversial bill in Parliament, courted obscene remarks from the cybertroopers on social media.
The aide was among the hundreds who had gathered outside Parliament when the government pushed through the controversial electoral constituency redelineation report.
A netizen uploaded her image and wrote,"Yeah, I would like to xxxxx you too."
In a press statement, Maria (photo) demanded that these netizens to apologise to her aide.
"I would like to congratulate Nadya for bravely expressing her views on the current redelineation," Maria said in a press statement today.
"She, like many Malaysians, is angry with the flagrant injustices plaguing our country.I am very proud that Nadya is my personal assistant and she is as committed to the cause as any Malaysian," Maria said.
"For cybertroopers to sexually harass her is a shameless act and a total violation of her right to expression. Hiding behind your keyboard and spewing out sexually abusive words is cowardly and disrespectful towards women.
"The world has moved on against sexual harassment and started the global #MeToo campaign, with many renowned artistes and prominent individuals speaking up against such unacceptable behaviour.
"I strongly demanded that these cowards come forward and apologise to Nadya immediately," Maria added. -Mkini
